As part of a teambuilding initiative, Third Age Group hosted a market day event to raise funds for charity on 7 September 2018.
The event was titled, “Around the World Charity Challenge”. Personnel were divided into teams and were tasked with the challenge of selling food and/or beverages, and/or an extra-curricular activity of their allocated country. Items were sold at an amount of R10 per item. Secondary to this, teams were also tasked with setting up market day stalls that best represented their allocated country.
In addition to the above, teams were also given the opportunity to raise funds by means of cash/EFT and cheque donations. These funds went towards the respective teams’ ‘donations box’. Team America (Third Age Group Head Office Bloemfontein; Danielle Engelbrecht, Jessica Wasserman, Lizanne Nadel, Pienaar Le Roux, Rhoda Moshoeu, Susan Du Preez and Werner Kotze) raised the most funds by means of cash donations. A big congratulations to them.
The teams selected 10 charities of their choice, and all the sales generated for the day, as well as the donations received, went towards the winning team’s charity.
Team members excelled in their task, by going above and beyond in their creativity, teamwork and enthusiasm, to make the day a memorable event. The event was a huge success with the total funds raised towards the initiative for Third Age Group Head Office Bloemfontein, a staggering R 10 019,10. Our Cape Town branches also joined forces and raised a fantastic R 2 374, 00. The total funds included the sales generated for the day, as well as generous donations from our sponsors.
It was a great privilege to welcome Tony and Emmanuel Moutsouyannis from Longhorn Grill Steak House and Copper and Coal Woodfired Grill, as the judges for the best overall stall at Bloemfontein. Team France (Gerhard Henning, Jean-Rick Odendaal, Rene Venter, Tanya Bandjes, Wona Basson, and Zelda Buitendag) impressed the judges immensely with their garlic and cheese French loaves and exceptional filled crepes! Team members each received a complimentary voucher for Longhorn Grill Steak House and Copper and Coal Woodfired Grill.
A huge congratulations to the winning teams! Team Hawaii Bloemfontein (Bernadine Mostert, Christelle Viljoen, Christo Thornhill, Deborah Mosiako, Ebeth Coetzee, Francois Malherbe, Monique Jacobs) and Team India Cape Town (Dirk van der Mescht, Fanie Nel, Linda Lottering, MC Dreyer, Priscilla Immelman, Reggie Solomon, Sabine Harvey, Tracey Delport and Yolandie Byles) who were unsurpassed in their initiative and selling skills, allowing them a well-deserved first place for sales generated and being the team that had the honour of donating all the funds raised towards the initiative to their organisation of choice. The funds raised by Team Hawaii Bloemfontein were donated to Engo Free State. ‘Engo is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation with 34 child and youth care centres, 23 aged care centres, 14 family care offices, 4 offices for persons with disabilities and 6 support offices for hospital care located in the Free State.’ www.engo.co.za. All funds raised were donated to the child and youth care centre.
Team India Cape Town chose the Tygerberg Service Centre T/A Meals on Wheels. They are a non-government, non-profit organisation that provides nutritional support on a weekly basis for older persons and sick people who are unable to leave their homes. They also provide meals for HIV-positive individuals at home and assist crèches and needy families with meals. They refer their clients to other social services and support mechanisms when required.
